Over the last 50 years, there has been a noticeable increase of hormone-related health problems: menstrual difficulties, infertility, fibroids, polycystic ovaries, endometriosis, breast, uterine and ovarian cancers. The women affected are getting younger all the time. The incidence of breast cancer has tripled in the past 3 decades and PMS (see previous article) and heavy periods affect over 50% of menstruating women. According to U.S. studies, girls seem to be reaching puberty earlier. While there are many contributing factors (stress, lifestyle, a polluted environment, genetics, allergies or infections), there is growing evidence that hormone-disrupting properties of a variety of chemicals found in pesticides, plastics, drugs and environmental toxins are the cause. Most of these xeno-oestrogens mimic the role of oestrogen in our bodies. Since women already produce oestrogen, this surplus of synthetic oestrogen may create high oestrogen in relation to progesterone in the body, i.e. oestrogen dominance. >>>
